Insurance help available 24/7Does Insurance Cover Biohazard Cleanup?
Many policies cover some or all of biohazard cleanup, but every policy is different. Here is what usually applies, what to ask your insurer, and how we help with documentation.
- Homeowner's
- Renter's
- Auto
- Commercial
Does homeowner's insurance cover biohazard cleanup?
Often, yes. Many homeowner's policies cover cleanup after sudden events such as a death, crime, suicide or accident, and sometimes after sewage backups if the policy includes a sewer backup endorsement. Coverage depends on your policy language, deductible and exclusions, so confirm with your insurer. We are not insurance advisors, but we provide the documentation insurers typically request.
What different policies may cover
Situations that may not be covered
Gradual problems
Long-term leaks, neglect or slow deterioration are often excluded.
Hoarding
Hoarding cleanouts are often not covered unless tied to a covered event.
Drug activity
Some policies exclude damage from illegal drug activity.
Flood
Standard policies generally exclude flood.
Documentation insurers ask for
Insurers usually want to see what happened, what was affected and why materials were removed. We provide photos before, during and after, a written scope of work, itemized invoices and disposal records.
With your permission, we can communicate directly with your adjuster to answer questions about the work.
Steps to take
- Call your insurer or agent to open a claim
- Ask whether biohazard cleanup is covered
- Ask about your deductible
- Keep damaged items until the adjuster approves disposal
- Save all receipts
- Ask us for documentation
We are not insurance advisors
Coverage decisions are made by your insurance company based on your policy. We cannot promise coverage. What we can do is document the work thoroughly so your claim has what it needs.
If you are a victim of a violent crime in Tennessee, you may also want to ask about the state's criminal injuries compensation program, which may help with certain costs. Contact the program directly for current eligibility rules.
